Hyderabad: The latest Sample Registration Survey (SRS) survey bulletin of the Health Ministry and Census Commissioner of India has put Telangana among top Indian States, which have succeeded in reversing the trend of gender gap in survival of female infants.

This means that the health machinery in Telangana has registered a drastic improvement in protecting the lives of infant females.

The SRS bulletin (Sept 2017) reflects the State’s success in putting to an end to the trend of losing more number of female infants than male infants within the first year of their birth due to various complications.

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), which is described as the number of deaths for every 1,000 live births, among female infants, has always remained high in both the Telugu-speaking States.

The SRS survey said that in the last few years, between 2015 and 2016, the IMR among infant females in Telangana was between 34 and 35 for every 1,000 live births, while among males it used to hover between 32 and 33.
